Not necessarily!!
Carbohydrates are your bodies PREFERRED source of fuel because they are quick and easy to process. That is primarily why we crave sweets when we're tired. Carbs are often demonized as the reason people are fat so why then do TOP-TIER ATHLETES use them? Today, I want to help you understand how to use Maurten's products in your training and racing like one of those athletes. As background, Maurten is from 🇸🇪 Sweden and has transformed how endurance athletes think about fueling by shifting the focus from calories to carbohydrates, precisely how many grams of carbohydrates you consume per hour (spoiler, you want this to be over 80g per hour) Maurten now has a ecosystem with drinks, gels, and bars that you can use individually or combined to create a complete fueling system. Don't worry. I'll make it easy to understand and implement. This amount of carbs can be challenging to achieve because it can cause your stomach to be miserable. If you've ever experienced this, it's not fun. Enter Maurten. What makes Maurten unique is its hydrogel technology that allows you to consume a large number of carbs per hour without getting an upset stomach. So does Maurten work? Will it make me a faster runner or rider? The answer is an emphatic yes, from Eliud Kipchoge breaking the two-hour marathon barrier to Gustav Iden winning the triathlon world championships in Kona, and Kílian Jornet conquering mountains at unprecedented speed. To start using Maurten, consider how many carbs per hour you want to consume. Start with a goal of 80g per hour. This can sound like a lot, but your body needs it. How to fuel with Maurten: Just using Gels You can get close by consuming three gels per hour (one every 20 minutes). Each gel has 25g of carbs. In total, this is 75g of carbs per hour. (Get Maurten Gels) Just using Drinks You can also reach your goal by consuming one bottle per hour of Maurten 320, which is 80g of carbs. Or if it is really hot and you want more fluid per hour, you can drink two bottles of Maurten 160 (40g of carbs each). Using Gels & Bars If three gels per hour sound daunting, you can combine Maurten's new bars into your fueling plan. Each bar is 40g of carbs. So, for example, if you have one bar per hour and add a gel every 30 minutes, you will be at 90g of carbs per hour. Using Gels, Bars, & Drinks Another way to go is a bottle of Maurten 160 per hour (or half a bottle of 320 if it isn't too hot). This gets you to 40g of carbs. Then add one gel (+25g) or 1 bar (+40g) per hour. When to use Caffeine? Maurten offers a caffeinated version of the Gel 100 and Drink Mix 320. Both deliver 100mg of Caffeine. Maurten's experts would like to see athletes reach 300-400mg of Caffeine on race day to boost how you feel and, as a result, how you perform. Caffeinated gels should be split up throughout. Aim for 100-200mg just before the start of the event and 200 mg more during the event. I aim to alternate the caffeinated gels with the regular gels. For example, I'll always start with a caffeinated gel and then take a regular one. I go back and forth between the regular and caffeinated versions until I've reached 3 or 4 caffeinated gels. Then I continue with the regular Gel 100 only. How to get started The Maurten Combination Pack is one of the best ways to start with Maurten. You get 6 of every product (Maurten Drink 320, Drink 160, Gel 100, and Gel 100 CAF 100). If you also want to try the bars, get the Bars Combo Pack with 6 of each flavor. Maurten can change the way you fuel your training. If you follow the plans above, you will notice let's dropoff in performance in workouts over an hour, and more energy and power towards the end of your workouts
